The beaches of kimolos

Kimolos beaches, kimolos sea. kimolos swim

Kimolos: A silver stroke in the Aegean sea

Sailors of the Medieval Age, Venetians and Franks used to call the island “Argentiere” which means Silver Island, probably due to its silver white stones.
“Kimolos” is an ancient name which means “white stone” and it was always in use by the natives.
In the ancient time it was also called “Echinoussa” (island of the sea urchins), due to its, full of life, sea.

The sea is still clear and blue. It keeps numerous species of seaweeds, meadows of Posidonia oceanica, many kinds of fishes and invertebrates as well as monk seals, dolphins and sea turtles.
You can swim almost everywhere. You' ll be excited! Still, we have some suggestions to make:

From the North to the Southwest, clockwise (see the map), the following beaches are really beautiful and easy to access. These beaches have connection to “Chorio” by regular bus services and have canteens/ restaurants:

Prassa (Agios Georgios)Kimolos - Prassa beach

White, coarse sand in and out of the sea, turquoise sea, loved by many. There are some sea caves under the church of St. George (Agios Georgios), where the monk seals breed in the autumn. Around the islet Prassonissi, the sea bottom is shelter to many kinds of fishes, sea urchins and corals.blank1x1blank1x1blank1x1blank1x1

Next to Aliki, Bonatsa is a long, golden, sandy beach with many tamarisks and sand lilies. Shallow waters.

Next to Bonatsa, Kalamitsi is in fact two beaches, one sandy and one with pebbles, with many tamarisks. It is facing the Kimolos – Milos channel. Here you can also see some cormorants’ nests.

The following beaches have no canteens or restaurants, so you should have some water and food with you. From the North to the West, clockwise (see map):

Kimolos island - Monastiria beachSoufi, Monastiria

You can go by walking (1h 30'), driving (preferably with a jeep) or sailing. The sea taxi makes a round – the - island tour and stops there for a swim. Sandy beaches, wonderful sea bottom.

Kimolos - Klima beachKlima

It is only 20' walking from Chorio, but you can also go by bus. Big pebbles and sand, many tamarisks, medium depth waters. Should be avoided though on days with northern wind blowing.

Kimolos - Goupa, RemaGoupa, Rema

Close to the Chorio, one next to the other. Rema looks like a natural swimming pool, with a nice scenery: “sirmata”, caves carved in the mild rock to keep the boats. Rocks shape natural caves, bridges and a big sitting elephant. Pebbles. Sandy sea bottom at the depth of 1m and more. Goupa is a fishermen's settlement with sirmata. Some of them are also used as houses.

Kimolos - Karas rocksKaras

Karas has rounded rocks, ideal for taking a dive.
Young people love it!

Kimolos - Dekas, Ellinika, MavrospiliaDekas, Ellinika, Mavrospilia

Three beaches, one next to the other. You can go to Dekas by bus. All three beaches are accessible by car. Dekas is Kimolos' “vegetable garden”.
